Why you should use 5-free nail polish?

October 16, 2015 0 Comments

When you make the switch to natural products, nail polish is, unfortunately, one of those items you quickly figure out is not going to be 100% natural. For some that means cutting it out of their routine completely (I give you all major props!). For others, like myself, we cannot stand to see our toes without some color on them, so we must search for the best possible formulas. Those formulas are usually 5-free, which means the nail polish does not contain the 5 most toxic ingredients that most polishes do have.

Those ingredients are:

  • DIBUTYL PHTHALATE is the ingredient in nail polish that allows the dyes to blend together. It has been linked to the disruption of hormone function and the reproductive system. Dibutyl Phthalate has also been found to cause birth defects in children and obesity.
  • FORMALDEHYDE is the ingredient you probably recognize and from the start know you do not want it on your skin. Formaldehyde is a preservative used in medical labs and mortuaries and also as a disinfectant. Research has shown that it is carcinogenic.
  • FORMALDEHYDE RESIN is a derivative of formaldehyde and a known allergen. It can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation.
  • CAMPHOR is used in nail polish to keep it flexible after it has dried. In high doses Camphor can act as poison, and has been linked to seizures when ingested (not good for nail biters!).
  • TOLUENE is found in paint, glues, gasoline, varnishes, and some nail polishes. It can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat causing issues with breathing and nausea. It is also toxic to the nervous system, developing fetuses, and has been linked to malignant lymphoma.

  • There are more and more nail polish brands working to eliminate as many toxins as possible and be 5-free. One of my favorites is Pistol Polish. They have a ton of awesome colors, and promote being for modern women who are go-getters. They are also cruelty free and made in the USA – which you know we love!

We are currently running a fabulous fall giveaway with Pistol Polish as well! See details and enter to win below:
