What are sulfates? And do so many beauty products boast that they are "sulfate free?" We're going to break all that down for you, because it's time to make the switch from chemical shampoos with sulfates, to natural sulfate free shampoos. That is, if you want to preserve the health of your hair!
What are sulfates?
Sulfates are detergents. The most common ones are Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. They give you that luxurious lather, but at the same time, strip the hair and scalp of all natural oils (aka moisture — some of which your hair should retain.) Does that sound alarming to anyone else? It just doesn’t seem ideal. That dryness leads to itchiness and breakage. So I decided it was time to reach for an organic shampoo without any of those harsh sulfates. Hair is already delicate enough as it is. So I tried an organic volumizing shampoo — Nurture My Body Volumizing Shampoo… and it was fantastic.
I don’t have super fine hair, but it’s certainly not thick, and it could use some natural volume. So with this shampoo, I didn’t lose the lather that I love and the fragrance was very natural and herby. I loved it and it just feels good to know that I’m using something that is nourishing and healthy for my scalp and hair. My hair felt cleaner and bouncier all day long. There’s no itchiness, no dryness and no irritation to be expected. And, I’m really looking forward to less breakage and split ends. I give it five stars! Bottom line: ditch the sulfates — you won’t miss them.
